HERKIMER, N.Y. – Dallas College Richland men's soccer team opened the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Tournament with a 3-0 win over Joliet Junior College Wednesday.
The Thunderducks (12-2-1) advance to Friday's semifinals to play Finger Lakes Community College at 3 p.m.
Richland took a 1-0 lead when Vicente Cabrera scored in the ninth minute on an assist from Mazin Saeed. It was Cabrera's first goal of the season.
Juan Macia added another goal for the Thunderducks in the 30th minute. It was his first goal of the year.
Richland goalkeeper Victor Gomez stopped a header in the 26th minute to keep Joliet off the board.
The Thunderducks peppered two shots on goal in the 53rd minute, but Wolves keeper Ivan Escatel stopped both to keep it a two-goal game.
Richland added an insurance goal in the 78th minute when Alexis Cruz deposited a setup from Cabrera to extend the lead to 3-0. It was Cruz's seventh goal of the season.
Gomez made five saves in the shutout. He improved to 12-2-1. Escatel stopped nine shots for the Wolves.
Richland outshot Joliet 26-12. The Thunderducks had 12 shots on goal. They outshot the Wolves 15-7 in the second half.
